Seventeen-year-old Hannah Grinrod presents her first fantasy novel in a two-book series, The Silences: Part I.

Lodi, Wisconsin July 9, 2004 –- A tale of bravery and beauty, tragedy and triumph, The Silences is the story of a knight named Trebor who lives on the east coast of the Isle of Rane. Part I begins as Trebor is knighted by an official of the castle in which he lives. His speech impediment quickly becomes evident as he gives a brief and embarrassing speech in acceptance of his ordained sword.

His short-comings unveiled, Trebor hopes others might at least respect him more, now that he holds a title. However, he quickly finds that he is still scorned by his peers and disliked by his superiors.

Driven to prove himself to his nation and himself, Trebor sets out on a quest and meets a woman named Amnia: an unusual girl who makes a hobby of forging knives and swords.

Zhorling, Amnia's close friend, convinces Trebor to speak to the girl's father for permission to court her. However, as Trebor had feared, Elxor refuses to allow the match since the knight doesn't know his own father – thus failing to suffice Elxor's requirement of Amnia marrying a man of good lineage.

However, his daughter is quite in love with Trebor; she either alienates or refuses all the men Elxor brings to her attention. In desperation, worried his daughter would delay long enough to be considered too old for marriage, her father arranges a tournament for her hand -- at least then her husband would be a reasonably good knight.

Trebor's long struggle for acceptance finally pays off at the tournament because of his great skills in battle, where he finishes as one of the two finalists. Unfortunately, his opponent wins the race by a very near margin; but he sees that Amnia and Trebor are in love and relinquishes his right to Amnia's hand.

A man named Gornel is murdered not long after the tournament, and Trebor stands accused. He tells Amnia that he must leave, and he rides into the northern wastelands. She promises that she will hang a red banner from her turret the moment it's safe for him to return; Trebor promises to come back every six months and check for the signal.

Ending part one of this story, Zhorling sees Trebor, one day, looking for the sign and notifies Amnia of his arrival. Discovering the banner gone and realizing it had must have blown away in the night, Amnia rides out to catch Trebor before he leaves.

The Silences Part I entails Trebor's adventures into becoming a knight worthy of respect and a man worthy of love.
